A New Owens Grandson
Congratulations to President and Sister Owens who had a new grandson born on Saturday, October 4th to their daughter Nicole and her husband in Provo, Utah. Marsha reports that it was a traumatic delivery and that the baby has been in intensive care with plans to hopefully come home today. He was full term and weighted 8 lb 5oz. at birth.

Increase in Faith and Personal Righteousness.

To do our part under the plan of the Lord, we are to increase our faith and personal righteousness. Membership in the Church requires faith, which we nourish throughout our lives with great “diligence, and patience, and long-suffering.” In the common heritage we share, we have remarkable examples of faith in the early women of the Church. Early pioneer women were driven from homes and persecuted because of their faith. Others survived fires and floods. They crossed oceans and walked thousands of miles, tolerating dirt, illness, and near starvation to help build the Lord’s kingdom on the earth. Many of them buried husbands, children, parents, and siblings along the way. Why did they do this? They did it because the fire of their faith burned in their souls. These remarkable women were not seeking fine clothing, greater leisure, large earthly mansions, or more possessions. Like you, they had a conviction and a testimony that the restored gospel of Jesus Christ was true and that the Lord needed them to do their part in establishing His kingdom on the earth. Their pursuit of personal righteousness was a daily effort to become more like the Savior through repentance, scripture study, prayer, obedience to commandments, and through seeking after everything “virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy.”
How strong is your own fire of faith?

I love October Conference to curl up in the cooler weather under a blanket and reserve two days for personal, spiritual feasting. If you for some reason missed General Conference today, you can watch it online now, or whenever (as soon as, surely!) you have the time. Click here to watch it online.
As always the talks were wonderful and especially hopeful considering the current state of our world. I am excited about the news of five more temples announced-- including locations in Kansas City and Rome! I was also inspired by President Monson's plea for us to pray for areas of the world that are not open to the gospel and Elder Christofferson's talk on establishing Zion. Our responsibility to help now to prepare the world for the second coming of the Lord, and to be instruments in building the Kingdom and sharing the gospel is exciting to me. I have been filled and cannot wait for more tomorrow.
I love that even though we all hear the same words, we receive different messages based on what we need to hear and how our spirits interpret things differently. What message did you hear?

General Conference
Saturday and Sunday, October 4th and 5th will be General Conference at 11:00am and 3:00 pm on both days. It will be broadcast at the church, on satellite tv, and available to watch online. California Prop 8
This video is enlightening when we consider the all-encompassing effects of legalizing same-sex marriage. Although the proposition is not on our ballot this year, it will likely be again at some point. Although the proposition to protect marriage was passed eight years ago in California, it was overturned by the decision of ONE court justice. The issue is now on the ballot again, in an effort to overturn the courts decision. Take a few minutes (about 4 minutes, actually) to see what many members of our church in California have been instructed (by our general church leaders) to talk about door to door everyday from now until election day.
Remember that as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, we have a sacred duty to defend the family.

The Family: A Proclamation to the World
The First Presidency and Council of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
We, the First Presidency and the Council of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, solemnly proclaim that marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God and that the family is central to the Creator's plan for the eternal destiny of His children.
All human beings—male and female—are created in the image of God. Each is a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents, and, as such, each has a divine nature and destiny. Gender is an essential characteristic of individual premortal, mortal, and eternal identity and purpose.
In the premortal realm, spirit sons and daughters knew and worshiped God as their Eternal Father and accepted His plan by which His children could obtain a physical body and gain earthly experience to progress toward perfection and ultimately realize his or her divine destiny as an heir of eternal life. The divine plan of happiness enables family relationships to be perpetuated beyond the grave. Sacred ordinances and covenants available in holy temples make it possible for individuals to return to the presence of God and for families to be united eternally.
The first commandment that God gave to Adam and Eve pertained to their potential for parenthood as husband and wife. We declare that God's commandment for His children to multiply and replenish the earth remains in force. We further declare that God has commanded that the sacred powers of procreation are to be employed only between man and woman, lawfully wedded as husband and wife.
We declare the means by which mortal life is created to be divinely appointed. We affirm the sanctity of life and of its importance in God's eternal plan.
Husband and wife have a solemn responsibility to love and care for each other and for their children. "Children are an heritage of the Lord" (Psalms 127:3). Parents have a sacred duty to rear their children in love and righteousness, to provide for their physical and spiritual needs, to teach them to love and serve one another, to observe the commandments of God and to be law-abiding citizens wherever they live. Husbands and wives—mothers and fathers—will be held accountable before God for the discharge of these obligations.
The family is ordained of God. Marriage between man and woman is essential to His eternal plan. Children are entitled to birth within the bonds of matrimony, and to be reared by a father and a mother who honor marital vows with complete fidelity. Happiness in family life is most likely to be achieved when founded upon the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. Successful marriages and families are established and maintained on principles of faith, prayer, repentance, forgiveness, respect, love, compassion, work, and wholesome recreational activities. By divine design, fathers are to preside over their families in love and righteousness and are responsible to provide the necessities of life and protection for their families. Mothers are primarily responsible for the nurture of their children. In these sacred responsibilities, fathers and mothers are obligated to help one another as equal partners. Disability, death, or other circumstances may necessitate individual adaptation. Extended families should lend support when needed.
We warn that individuals who violate covenants of chastity, who abuse spouse or offspring, or who fail to fulfill family responsibilities will one day stand accountable before God. Further, we warn that the disintegration of the family will bring upon individuals, communities, and nations the calamities foretold by ancient and modern prophets.
We call upon responsible citizens and officers of government everywhere to promote those measures designed to maintain and strengthen the family as the fundamental unit of society.
